It is believed that tennis originated from a French game called jeu de paume (game of the palm) in the 12th century.  Jeu de paume was a french handball game, in which you would play on a court and hit the ball with your hands.  Later on, rackets were used instead of just hands, and the game spread all over Europe.  In 1873, Major Walter Wingfield, invented a game from which modern tennis was evolved.  Tennis can be played as singles (1 on 1) or doubles (2 on 2).  In the game, you have to serve the ball diagonal onto the other side of the court, where the opponent will try to return it.  Both of you will try to keep rallying it until the ball bounces on the same side of the court twice, or it goes out. Some of the greatest tennis players ever are Rafael Nadal, Rodger Federer, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Boris Becker, and more.  (These are not in order from #1 to #7.)
Here is the fastest tennis serve ever. This serve was recorded to be 263 km/h! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVlTc1vYsjQ
